What is a German Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)?

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is a special bank account required by the German Federal Foreign Office to prove you have sufficient financial resources (Finanzierungsnachweis) to support yourself during your studies in Germany.

You must deposit a specific lump sum into the account before applying for your student visa. The bank blocks this money and pays it back to you in equal monthly installments once you arrive in Germany.

2025/2026 Blocked Account Requirements

  • Required Total Amount: €11,904 for a full academic year (12 months).
  • Monthly Payout Limit: €992 per month (this is the maximum amount you can withdraw each month to cover rent, health insurance, and living expenses).
  • Additional Fees: Most providers charge a one-time setup fee (approx. €49 to €89) plus a small monthly administration fee (approx. €5).

You can open an account online with any of the following officially recognized providers:

  • Expatrio: Fully digital, fast approval (usually 24 hours), offers value packages with health insurance.
  • Fintiba: Digital, well-established, integrated with Sutor Bank.
  • Coracle: Digital, fast processing, popular for its low package fees.
  • Deutsche Bank: Paper-based, slow process, requires document certification at the German embassy.

  • Fill out the application form on your chosen provider's website.
  • Upload a scanned copy of your passport and your university admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid).

Step 3: Transfer the Funds

  • Once approved, the provider will send you a document containing your unique IBAN and international wire instructions.
  • Transfer the required €11,904 (plus buffer fees) from your local bank via international wire (SWIFT) or through digital transfer services.

Step 4: Receive the Blocking Confirmation

  • Once the bank receives your funds, you will get an email with the official Blocking Confirmation (Sperrbestätigung).
  • Print this confirmation document. You must present it at the German embassy during your visa interview.
